“NEWPORT — Grammy Award-winning Soprano Karen Slack — known internationally as “an extraordinary performer and a change-maker in classical music” — will take to the stage Saturday at The Breakers when The 2025 Newport Classical Music Festival presents “African Queens,” an evening of music and storytelling highlighting Slack’s operatic virtuosity in a powerful selection of new works by both African and American composers. The program will center around eight new songs written for Slack by some of today’s most acclaimed composers including Jasmine Barnes, Damien Geter, Jessie Montgomery, Shawn Okpebholo, Dave Ragland, Carlos Simon and Joel Thompson.”
