Founded in 2014, The Choir School of Newport County has earned a place as the area’s premier children’s choir, having trained and performed in England for two weeks in 2018, traveled to New York City and Washington, DC, performed at local and regional festivals in its home state including the 2021 Newport Folk Festival, and issued its first commercial recording last Christmas. Based at Newport’s Zabriskie Memorial Church of St. John the Evangelist, the nonsectarian afterschool program serves a diverse student body from all over Aquidneck Island and as far away as Warren and Warwick, and is tuition-blind. The Professional Choristers earn stipends for their dedicated work and sing intergenerationally with professional adults on lower voice parts, while also singing lighter repertoire alone. The school’s mission is to form lives of character and service, and through joyous music show children where a love of music can take them. Their next international training tour is to Argentina and Uruguay, August 1-14, 2023.
In this presentation of Messiah, ten top choristers and eight adults from the St. John’s Choir form a concertato group for contrast against the full chorus.
