The Elms was the summer residence of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Julius Berwind of Philadelphia and New York. Mr. Berwind made his fortune in the coal industry. In 1898, the Berwinds engaged Philadelphia architect Horace Trumbauer to design a house modeled after the mid-18th century French Château d’Asnieres outside Paris.
The formal grounds of The Elms are a Newport highlight. In keeping with the French architecture of the house, the grounds were designed in French eighteenth-century taste and include a sunken garden. Though the estate’s namesake American Elms long ago succumbed to Dutch Elm disease, they were replaced with a shimmering grove of weeping Beech trees.
