Redwood Library & Athenæum, chartered in 1747, is America’s first purpose-built library, and the oldest continuously operating in its original location. As such, this handsome building is the only remaining secular public cultural institution in this country with an unbroken link to the colonial period and America’s founding. It has functioned for nearly three-hundred years as Newport’s intellectual core, a humanities center and civic learning hub styled after ideals of ancient Athenian culture and philosophy.
The Library & Athenæum is crafted of wood “rusticated” to look like stone, which was in keeping with then-fashionable English Palladian taste. The architectural design, modeled after a Roman Doric temple with portico and wings, is the work of Peter Harrison, known as America’s first professionally trained architect, and it represents the first use of such a design in the New World.
