“Period instrument ensemble Apollo’s Fire and its dynamic leader harpsichordist Jeanette Sorrell lit a fire Friday night in the Breakers Mansion. Founded in 1992 by Sorrell, the Cleveland group with programs in Ohio and the Chicago, area also tours the rest of the nation and internationally garnering awards, citations, and stellar reviews. Sorrell describes her vision as “dedicated to the baroque ideal that music should evoke the various Affekts or passions in the listeners, Apollo’s Fire is a collection of creative artists who share Sorrell’s passion for drama and rhetoric.” Last night’s concert focused on the aristocratic 18th-century sport of fencing, through the music of “two friends (who were also rivals) and an admired colleague” – these being Telemann, Bach and Vivaldi, with delightful insertions by Marin Marais and their resident composer René Schiffer…”
