There’s not a lot of diversity in the canon of classical music, but Gillian Friedman Fox feels a change coming, at least where the Newport Music Festival is concerned.
The festival — which committed to hosting an in-person event in 2021 — recently announced the appointment of Friedman Fox as its executive director. She says one of her first commitments in the role is to commission new work by women and people of color.
“Commissioning gives these rising stars an opportunity to play a role in the future of classical music,” Friedman Fox says in an interview from Dallas. Today’s civil, political and social unrest is the ideal backdrop to elevate artists who might otherwise be overlooked.
