Magdalena Kuźma

Polish-American soprano Magdalena Kuźma was a Prize Winner in the Concert Artists Guild (New York) and Young Classical Artists Trust International Auditions in 2022. This season she joins the Metropolitan Opera in New York as a Lindemann Young Artist where her roles initially include Giannetta in Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore. Over the last year Magdalena has made her debut at Santa Fe Opera performing the role of Frasquita (Carmen). She returned to San Francisco Opera’s Merola Program and was a fellow at Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute. Recent awards include 1st Prize at the 2021 ACPC Marcella Sembrich Vocal Competition, the 2021 Opera Mississippi John Alexander Vocal Competition, and the CT District of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition. In 2021 she was honored as valedictorian at Yale University. An alumna of Renee Fleming’s SongStudio at Carnegie Hall and passionate about song, future engagements include her debut at Merkin Concert Hall (New York) and Wigmore Hall (London).

On the concert platform highlights have included Mahler’s Symphony No.4 with Richmond Symphony Orchestra and recitals at the Arts Club of Washington D.C., New York City’s Saint John’s in the Village, and Paris’s Galerie dorée de la Banque de France. She has worked with and performed music by composers Nico Muhly, André Previn, John Musto, and Tom Cipullo. During her studies Magdalena’s roles have included Pamina in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte (Opera Orlando), Lila in Higdon’s Cold Mountain (Music Academy of the West), Blanche in Poulenc’s Dialogues de Carmélites and Anna in Weill’s Die Sieben Todsünden (Oberlin Opera) Miles in Britten’s Turn of the Screw and Giannetta in Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore (Chautauqua Institute), and Drusilla in Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea (Teatro Petrarca).

She has studied Barbarina and Susanna in Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, Anne Trulove in Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress, and Sophie in Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier and participated in opera scenes including Giulietta in Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Monntecchi, Manon in Massenet’s Manon, Echo in Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos , Lucia in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, and Helena in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Magdalena is also an alumna of Houston Grand Opera’s Young Artists Vocal Academy & The Bach Institute at Emmanuel Music. She holds degrees in music and psychology from Oberlin College & Conservatory, The Juilliard School, and Yale University where she recently completed her Masters studying with Gerald Martin Moore. She has participated in masterclasses with Renée Fleming, Marilyn Horne, James Conlon, Edith Bers, Carrie Ann Matheson, among many others.
